Big Boy Room Reveal

I’m happy to finally reveal my oldest son’s big boy room! I definitely wish I had it ready before baby # 2 arrived (last December) but at least it is done now!

I wanted to surprise my son and have the room completely finished when he opened his bedroom door. While he slept over at Grandma and Grandpa’s house we finished the room. I’ll never forget his reaction when he came into the finished room, it was so adorable… he loved it!

Here is what the room looked like before:

Here is the after:

I had a lot of fun looking on Minted for an over-sized print to hang over my husband’s antique dresser. I was immediately drawn to the deer print when I saw it, it’s called “A Deer Friend”… It seemed to fit perfectly with his room and is very sweet. There were so many great options for frames on Minted, I chose reclaimed barnwood and was pretty happy with how it looked when I opened the box. Here are some other fun prints for a kid’s room.

When it came time to putting the room together, I couldn’t decide on a theme so I wanted to combine everything my son loves – the outdoors, trains & trucks, baseball, puzzles, dinosaurs, etc. The first thing we did to the room was paint the mountain mural, which was inspired by our trip out west last summer. I wanted a bed that could be used as he got older so I was pretty happy to find the Pottery Barn Catalina bed on sale because it was the floor model. After searching online for bedding, I decided on the Deep Blue quilt and the Blue Rocket sheet set from The Land of Nod. It was really hard choosing a quilt and sheets from their store… everything is so cute!!

I wanted a room that he could explore and be adventurous in but still want to go to sleep when he was done playing. I had to be careful bringing in so many toys because I didn’t want it to become a playroom. All of the toys have their spot so I make sure we tidy up at the end of each day and move everything back to their spot.

The school desk is an antique find from the Christie Antique Show. I also found the “N” (on top of the shelf), the antique tins (honey and peanut butter), and the blue mirror above the books at the antique show. The toy shelf unit is from IKEA. I wanted to display vintage robots, puzzles, musical instruments, a wooden boat, dinosaurs and other various toys. I had to make sure there were some framed pictures in there along with a little clock my mom gave me when N was born… it shows the time he was born, so sweet!

I bought the prints above the bed from this Etsy seller. She didn’t have the airplane print but I was able to get a custom print… total cost was $60 including shipping. I bought the frames from IKEA.

The bench is actually the IKEA KALLAX bookshelf. We made the cushion to put on top of the unit. Before we added the cushion it didn’t feel sturdy when I sat on it, now that the cushion is on it works much better as a bench.

Hope you enjoyed the reveal… I had a lot of fun with this room. N still loves this room and I can definitely see it working for many years to come and there are some great pieces in there that will transition into the next design of his room!

Thank you to Destiny Dawn for taking these pictures of N’s room, you captured it perfectly!
